Dion Bruce is a creative and filmmaker born and raised in Rotterdam. His work mainly revolves around the human condition and its place within society. With a background in journalism his work is often tied to current issues.
His style can be described as dreamlike and surreal. The stories he tells are intimate and try to shed light on topics that don't often see it.
''During my years studying journalism at HU Utrecht, I nurtured my interest in social stories from the perspective of individuals. At the same time I learned about the mechanisms of media and the positions of the aforementioned individuals in the bigger picture. It was here where I first came in contact with professional cameras and my forgotten urge to be creative was rediscovered. After almost graduating it was time to take storytelling to a different route and become a filmmaker.
While studying at HKU Utrecht I developed my style and how to translate these interests to a script and eventually on film. By researching and experimenting I discovered what is needed to converge the different themes that interest me.
These themes include psychology, philosophy, crime, nostalgia, time, horrors of mundane life, family and friends, the supernatural.
I've always had interest in these themes and therefore research them on a almost daily basis. Besides knowledge understanding atmospheres and emotions are essential to convey these themes to the audience and tell a compelling multilayered story.''
Other art disciplines like architecture, music, photography and design, help me to keep my mind fresh and challenge myself to be perceptive for new ideas.''
